The return of Monday humor (H/T: Daily Quip)

The couple were 85 years old, and had been married for sixty years. Though they were far from rich, they managed to get by because they watched their pennies. Though not young, they were both in very good health, largely due to the wife's insistence on healthy foods and exercise for the last decade. One day, their good health didn't help when they went on a rare vacation and their plane crashed, sending them off to Heaven. They reached the pearly gates, and St. Peter escorted them inside. He took them to a beautiful mansion, furnished in gold and fine silks, with a fully stocked kitchen and a waterfall in the master bath. A maid could be seen hanging their favorite clothes in the closet. They gasped in astonishment when he said, "Welcome to Heaven. This will be your home now." The old man asked Peter how much all this was going to cost. "Why, nothing," Peter replied, "remember, this is your reward in Heaven." The old man looked out the window and right there he saw a championship golf course, finer and more beautiful than any ever built on Earth. "What are the greens fees?", grumbled the old man. "This is heaven," St. Peter replied. "You can play for free, every day." Next they went to the clubhouse and saw the lavish buffet lunch, with every imaginable cuisine laid out before them, from seafood to steaks to exotic deserts, free flowing beverages. "Don't even ask," said St. Peter to the man. "This is Heaven, it is all free for you to enjoy." The old man looked around and glanced nervously at his wife. "Well, where are the low fat and low cholesterol foods, and the decaffeinated tea?" he asked. "That's the best part," St. Peter replied. "You can eat and drink as much as you like of whatever you like, and you will never get fat or sick. This is Heaven!" The old man pushed, "No gym to work out at?" "Not unless you want to," was the answer. "No testing my sugar or blood pressure or..." "Never again. All you do here is enjoy yourself." The old man glared at his wife and said, "You and your bran muffins. We could have been here ten years ago!"

Prayer request

I haven't posted for a very long time. I didn't feel like I had much to say. Hopefully I can get "with it" a bit more often. As for right now, there is an urgent prayer request. A wonderful blogger, Angela Messenger, is asking for a shower of prayers. Her Godfather, who lives in Holland, is scheduled to be euthanized on Friday. It doesn't seem real to even type those words. He has been ill and we're praying that he can die naturally, in God's own time, before this can happen. Pray that God's will be done and not that of man's.

Thanksgiving

Unemployment is still at 9.6%. The economy is struggling. Air travel is a near occasion of sin on SO many levels. The temperature outside right now is 20 F. Exactly what is there for which to be thankful??? Perhaps I should crawl back into bed, pull the covers up and forget the whole day.

Wait a minute! I have a bed - with covers. At least that is something for which to be thankful. And that bed is in a house with heat. And I have a computer and internet access to write this ramble. I have a dog at my feet and one on my lap. There is a turkey in the oven - and it isn't even for dinner today! No, I get to eat at the big family dinner - with FAMILY! I have three beautiful children; Jon, Jordon and Julie who are absolutely incredible. I have an extended family who care about me even with good reason to not care. Maybe I do have reason to be thankful.

In the words of the ever present infommercial, "But wait! There's more!"

After dinner I will visit with some dear friends. Yes! I do have friends! Before dinner I will do a bit of shopping (for those kiddos). When I return home (in a car that is old but runs well), I will settle in and watch some television, surf the net, eat a turkey sandwich (tradition) and return to that cozy bed.

I am alive. My health is good (for an old man). My brother is recovering well from cancer surgery. Although my Mom, Dad and sister are no longer here in the flesh, they are praying for me in the communion of saints.

Apparently I have plenty for which to be thankful! And today I give most thanks to God! He who has given me more gifts than I can fathom. There in lies the challenge. Do we watch the daily news and lament about the ills of the world? Or do we look beyond and above to the One who has given us His very Son.

"FOR GOD SO LOVED THE WORLD THAT HE GAVE US HIS ONLY SON THAT WE MIGHT HAVE ETERNAL LIFE."

28 years ago today my Mom, Cecilia T. Wardle succumbed to cancer at the age of 62. Far too young and too little time with her. She taught 1st communion classes for 35 years and was one of the first recipients of the Pius X award in our diocese. I still miss her very much. (Picture is a photo of a pastel done by a friend of mine).

He stormed to his wife in the kitchen and announced, "From now on, you need to know that I am the man of this house and my word is Law. You will prepare me a gourmet meal tonight, and when I'm done eating my meal, you will serve me a scrumptious dessert.

After dinner, you are going to go upstairs with me and we will have the kind of sex that I want!
Afterwards, you are going to draw me a bath so I can relax. You will wash my back and towel me dry and bring me my robe. Then, you will massage my feet and hands. Then tomorrow, guess who's going to dress me and comb my hair?"

The wife replied, "The funeral director would be my first guess."

**Saturday morning I got up early, quietly dressed, made my lunch, and slipped quietly into the garage. I hooked up the boat up to the van, and proceeded to back out into a raging downpour. The wind was blowing 50 mph, so I pulled back into the garage, turned on the radio, and discovered that the weather would be bad all day.
I went back into the house, quietly undressed, and slipped back into bed. I cuddled up to my wife's back, now with a different anticipation, and whispered, "The weather out there is terrible."

A man goes to a party and has too much to drink. His friends plead with him to let them take him home. He says NO -- he only lives a mile away. About five blocks from party, the police pull him over. They check his license and ask him to get out of the car and walk the line. Just as he starts, the police radio blares out a notice of a robbery taking place in a house around the block.
The police tell the party animal to stay put, they'll be right back and they run around the corner to the robbery.
The guy waits and waits and finally decides to drive home. When he gets there, he tells his wife he is going to bed, and to tell anyone who might come looking for him that he has the flu and has been in bed all day. A few hours later the police knock on the door. The police ask if Mr. Smith is there and the wife says yes. The police ask to see him and the wife replies that he is in bed with the flu and has been so all day.
The police still have his driver's license. The police ask to see his car and the wife asks why. The police insist on seeing his car, so the wife takes the police to the garage.The wife opens the garage door; and there, sitting in the garage...... is the police car, with all its lights still flashing.

A Department of Water Resources Representative stops at a Texas ranch and talks with an old rancher. He tells the rancher, I need to inspect your ranch for your water allocation.

The old rancher says, Okay, but don't go in that field over there.

The Water Representative says, Mister, I have the authority of the Federal Government with me. See this card? This card means I am allowed to go WHEREVER I WISH on any agricultural land. No questions asked or answered. Have I made myself clear? Do you understand??

The old rancher nods politely and goes about his chores.

Later, the old rancher hears loud screams and sees the Water Rep running for his life and close behind is the rancher's huge Brahman bull. The bull is gaining with every step.

The Rep is clearly terrified, so the old rancher immediately throws down his tools, runs to the fence and yells at the top of his lungs.....

I've been listening to Obama tell us at every opportunity how much money all his policies will save the American taxpayer. It reminded of me of an old story.

A man was telling his friend about gas saving measures he was using with his car. "I had the engine tuned up and I'm saving 35%. I checked the air in my tires and added another 10%. I got 25% improvement by never exceeding 55 mph." His friend was impressed. "But that's not all.", he continued. "I shut off the engine at drive-up windows and gained 20%. And not using the air conditioning gives me another 15%."
"That's outstanding!",exclaimed his friend. "You must be really happy!" "It's a real pain in the butt!", said the man. "I have to stop every 20 miles and drain the excess gas out of the tank!"

Tonight, as we have during Lent, my 6th grade CCD class prayed the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. Each week we have prayed for different intentions; families, the sick, priests. Tonight we prayed for our Holy Father. I told them that Pope Benedict was facing much criticism, albeit undeserved, and needed the help that our prayer would give him. They have always been good about the responses. But this evening they were even more so. 15 young people, in a large building, filled the entire church with their responses. It sounded like there were a hundred people praying. I was so surprised and moved that I had a hard time leading the prayer. As we left, some of them commented, "I really like that prayer." I knew they were really praying for the Holy Father. The evil one will not win when 12 year olds pray like this.

"And the gates of Hell shall not prevail..."

Yesterday I was at my local COSTCO buying a large bag of Purina dog chow for my loyal pet, Biscuit, the Wonder Dog and was in the checkout line when a woman behind me asked if I had a dog.
What did she think I had, an elephant? So since I'm retired and have little to do, on impulse I told her that no, I didn't have a dog, I was starting the Purina Diet again. I added that I probably shouldn't, because I ended up in the hospital last time, but that I'd lost 50 pounds before I awakened in an intensive care ward with tubes coming out of most of my orifices and IVs in both arms.
I told her that it was essentially a perfect diet and that the way that it works is to load your pants pockets with Purina nuggets and simply eat one or two every time you feel hungry. The food is nutritionally complete so it works well and I was going to try it again. (I have to mention here that practically everyone in line was now enthralled with my story.)
Horrified, she asked if I ended up in intensive care because the dog food poisoned me. I told her no, I stepped off a curb to sniff an Irish Setter's rear end and a car hit us both.
I thought the guy behind her was going to have a heart attack he was laughing so hard. Costco won't let me shop there anymore.
Better watch what you ask retired people. They have all the time in the world to think of crazy things to say.

Royal Navy Officer Saves Life of Army Colleague in Horse-Back Riding Mishap
An Army Officer assigned to the Military Academy in Sandhurst narrowly escaped serious injury recently when he attempted horseback riding with no prior experience. After mounting his horse unassisted, the horse immediately began moving. As it galloped along at a steady and rhythmic pace, the officer, Lieutenant Tommy Thomas, began to slip sideways from the saddle.
Although attempting to grab for the horse's mane Thomas could not get a firm grip. He then threw his arms around the horse's neck but continued to slide down the side of the horse. The horse galloped along, seemingly oblivious to its slipping rider. Finally, losing his grip, the Lieutenant attempted to leap away from the horse and throw himself to safety. His foot, however, became entangled in the stirrup, leaving him at the mercy of the horse's pounding hooves as his head and upper body repeatedly struck the ground.
Moments away from unconsciousness, and probable death, to his great fortune Commodore Steve Cleary [RN Ret'd] shopping at Waitrose, saw him and quickly unplugged the horse.

A taxi passenger tapped the driver on the shoulder to ask him a question. The driver screamed, lost control of the car, nearly hit a bus, went up on the footpath, and stopped centimetres from a shop window. For a second everything went quiet in the cab, then the driver said, "Look mate, don't ever do that again. You scared the daylights out of me!" The passenger apologized and said, "I didn't realize that a little tap would scare you so much. "The driver replied, "Sorry, it's not really your fault. Today is my first day as a cab driver. Is it Possible?

Scott Brown: A fairly unknown (at least nationally) state senator from a state with a well known political machine. He has a pretty wife who is very successful in her own right. Two beautiful daughters. He bursts onto the national scene with message of change and transparency and is elected to the Senate of the United States. Might he be a viable candidate for president in 2012? He will have hardly served in the senate by the time the campaign begins. He will have very little experience on a national level. There will not be much of a track record to judge him. Really! What are the chances that this type of a scenario would really happen in the country? I mean, c'mon; would the American people ever elect someone with that type of background????

(Disclaimer: I am not saying that this is who I'm pushing for. Only making an observation.)

Guardian Angels

I love to think about angels. From the very earliest I can remember, my parents taught me about guardian angels. I was taught to make the Guardian Angel Prayer one of my morning prayers. We pray this prayer every morning at our pre-school with our 3 & 4 year olds. As with all prayers, one must take care not to allow the rote recitation to lead us into complacency.

I read a story once about an instance of angelic intervention. It was of a young women walking home late at night on a darkened street. She had to pass by a sinister looking man. She said a quick prayer to her guardian angel and walked quickly by. She passed safely and entered her apartment building. Sometime later, she heard a commotion outside and looked out to see police cars in the street. She went out to inquire and was told that a young women was assaulted. She told the police that she had seen a man on the street when she had passed a bit earlier. The police said they had someone in custody and asked if she might come and see if she could identify him as the man she had seen earlier. She did and it was. She asked the police if she could ask the man why he had left her alone when she passed. The man answered, "I saw you. It would have been stupid to attack you with those two big guys walking on each side of you."

My own experience was less spectacular. I was mowing hay many years ago and the mower knife became clogged with grass. My usual practice was to disengage the power and remove the grass. I guess being almost finished (and tired) I forgot to disengage the mower. I reached down for the grass with the blade slicing back and forth. About 6 inches away, something grabbed my arm and stopped me in mid reach. I suddenly had a "vision" of a right hand with no fingers. I know who stopped me and have been ever grateful. (I type slow enough as it is with two hands).

I am so grateful that God loves us so much to give us angels to watch over us.

Thank you one and all for your support and comments. All of you have been so kind as I begin this foray into the great blogosphere. Thanks to all of you who posted about my blog and sent so many of your readers in my direction. Thank you to all my commenters who have encouraged me and given me some great suggestions. I will still be messin' around for awhile with the template. Now that I have an idea of how this works, I will start paying more attention to other bloggers' details instead of just their fantastic posts. I hope you will keep checking back. (Eventually I might even post something worthwhile).

Speaking of computers, I'm not sure how many of you watch Psych on USA, but there was a great line in the last episode. One of the main characters, Shawn, was asking his Dad (played by Corbin Bernsen) in the opening flashback - 1989, if he could get a computer. His Dad told him to, "Get your head out of the clouds! It's a passing fad like rap music, Madonna and L. A. Law."

How does one conclude that there is probably coverage for abortion or illegal immigrants in the proposed health care program? How many pro-abortion protestors or pro-amnesty demonstrators are storming the U.S. capitol demanding its inclusion. They do not seem to concerned, do they? PAX

Here We Go!

A lot of friends have been encouraging me to create a blog for quite some time. Well... now you've done it! I am going to give it a try. It might not be pretty and it might not be fun - or it might turn out to be pretty fun. Time will tell. You will tell too. If you like what you read, I will be around for awhile. If not... it was a fun month. I read many blogs and I am awed and inspired by so many of them. They are deep, intellectual, moving, spiritual, funny, crazy and sometimes all of the above at the same time. I have "met" some great people and made friends that I hope to meet in person someday. If this blog is anywhere near the quality of some of those I will be most satisfied.

I am Roman Catholic. Born and baptized as an infant. I have lived my whole life in one place. Still live in the house I grew up right here in northern Utah. I am a parish musician, CCD teacher, involved in youth ministry and a pre-school aide. I am blessed to have a great pastor, the one and only, Orthometer. I am conservative in my religious views and my political views as well. If this works out, you will come to know more about all this in the coming days and weeks. I do not have a particular plan for this blog other than to muse and have a place for the award that Gem of the Ocean has given me. Time will tell where it goes. On occasion, it might just be a rant or ramble . Once in a great while it might even have a bit of profundity. (But don't hold your breath).

If you've made it this far, there might be hope. (No change, just hope). Check back from time to time and you might be amazed, surprised, enraged, entertained or bored. We shall see. PAX.
